Combe Down Stone Mines Project

The Combe Down Stone Mines project has started work filling the mines workings and stabilising the village. Recently they took possession of a large area of the Firs Field, and are currently building their site which they will occupy for the next 7 years. The majority of the mine workings will be filled with foamed concrete, although areas will be preserved for the resident bat population!

Part of this work has included opening up the light shaft within the Scout Hut grounds. The Scout Group has always known that the area underneath our headquarters was mined, however nobody believed just how little rock there was between the roof of the mines and the ground above! The picture below shows the mine workings, as viewed from the opened light shaft.

This photo clearly shows how little soil there is in Combe Down.

Workings

The project team have to work around some of the permanent items in the Firs Field, including this tree and the war memorial. Other items, such as the childrens playground, have been moved.

The final two photographs show how the mine roof is being held up in places.
